In Other Waters – First Play

In Other Waters is a top-down adventure game where you play the AI navigation system built into a diving suit being worn by a diver on an alien planet. The diver is, for some reason, unable to navigate on their own, so they are reliant on you to navigate via a series of way-points and points of interest to help unravel the mysteries held in the depths of the alien world.

The graphic style of this game is very simplistic, but well represents the perspective of the AI system you are adopting. The controls are introduced to you in a very innovative way that makes it obvious what you need to do without breaking character or ruining the immersion.

The game is clearly story driven, as the game mechanics are kept simple right from the outset. There’s no complicated tech tree or crafting system to worry about (at least not that I’ve seen), which leaves you to enjoy the ambience and follow the unravelling mystery story line. All in all, the game is quite relaxed, tranquil, even perhaps therapeutic.

One side effect of the games simplicity is that it does get quite “samey” quite quickly. Once you’ve mastered the controls (which doesn’t take long), it’s very much a case of “more of the same” from that point on… not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, it’s meant to be story driven after all. If you’re looking for an action-adventure, this is not it, but it is a fun interactive story that could have you engrossed.

As you will see from the video, during my first play, I didn’t delve too far into the story, but I was left wondering what happens next. I’ll let you find that out for yourself.
